CHARLES BOARDMAN NEWHALL
1902-1984
Charles B. Newhall was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on June 8, 1902, a direct descendant of Thomas Newhall, who was born in Lynn in 1630. He grew up in Lynn, graduating from the Lynn Classical High School in 1919 and from Harvard College in 1923. He took his law degree from the Harvard Law School in 1926.
Charlie had been active in sports in his school years, becoming captain of the football team in high school. He was also very active with his sister, Avia, in climbing in the White Mountains. While in law school and for some years afterwards, he made several trips to the Alps during which he climbed a number of the interesting ascents in the Mont Blanc and Zermatt areas. In these years, he also found time to make a number of climbs in the Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara, and Yoho Valley area of the Canadian Rockies. In 1930 he made an attempt on Black Tooth in the Big Horn Mountains, which was frustrated by lack of time although he reached within 400 feet of the summit.
He was active in the early years of New England rock climbing with the Appalachian Mountain Club. Rock climbers will remember him as the creator of one of the well known climbs in Joe English Hill in New Boston, New Hampshire named after him as "Charlie's Face."
The pressure of his legal work and a growing family, three sons, precluded his later activity in the mountains, but he was active in the Appalachian Moun-tain Club where he served on the Council and became Corresponding Secretary. He took up badminton and became extremely proficient achieving the presi-dency of the American Badminton Association and a member of their Hall of Fame. He died after a short illness on June 1, 1984.
